Selecting Grapes For Specific Purposes.
It is debatable as to which fruits are best for one’s health. Some say that bananas are nature’s most perfect fruit. Others quote the old proverb about an apple a day keeping the doctor away. Probably nothing that I say here will solve the mystery about the best fruit for one’s health. However, I can say that grapes are very high on the list of good fruits to eat for better health. While wonderful for nighttime snacks, grapes also have a high nutritional value.
Selecting grapes for snack times is a personal taste situation. Many people prefer the larger globe varieties of grapes because of the larger amount of fruit per piece. Other people prefer seedless varieties of grapes because the presence of seeds to be spitted out is distasteful to them. The Concord varieties of grapes grown in many backyards are preferred by still other people. Since there are hundreds of varieties of grapes available, the choices are numerous.
When studying grape nutrition facts, it is noteworthy that eating grapes may prevent oxidized cholesterol, a common cause of heart disease. Grapes seem to have naturally-occurring antioxidants. Even grape jelly, grape jam or grape juice contains these same antioxidants so it is not necessary to eat fresh grapes to enjoy the benefits.
Grapes are handled differently nowadays than in the past. The old grape stomp idea is frowned on to a great extent since the idea of grape juice being squeezed out by stepping on the grapes with one’s bare feet is hardly an appetizing thought. A more modern practice for getting the juice is the use of a grape press. This press is considered to be much cleaner than a person’s feet. This more sanitary grape juice is ready to be used to produce jellies or jams or can be bottled as grape juice.
As to whether white grapes are as valuable for healthy living as red grapes, nutritionists agree that there is no difference between the red and the white varieties. Both the skin and the flesh of white grapes and red grapes are powerful in the prevention of heart disease. The major difference between the grapes is the color of the skin and the juice that is squeezed out for making juice and wine.
If a person decides to try to grow grapes to make wine at home, one factor in the choice of a variety is the climate. Some grapes are best when grown in cooler climates while others prefer a warmer growing element. Wine grape vines grow best in sunny areas. Grape vines will grow in shadier conditions, but sunny conditions produce better wine grape vines. If you live in a cooler climate, you need to choose hybrid grape varieties which produce in a shorter growing season.
Grapes are surely one of mankind’s favorite fruits, whether eaten as raw fruit or made into jellies or juices, or even eaten as raisins, which are simply dried grapes. Their natural sweetness contrasts with foods which are sweetened with sugars. Since grapes are strong antioxidants, we gain both by their heart-saving features and by their delicious taste.
